In order to avoid dealing with an AC replacement in the spring, there are certain maintenance jobs Miranda Plumbing & Air Conditioning recommends doing before winter arrives. These small tasks will only take you a few minutes this season, but they will save you plenty of headaches and repair costs once summer arrives.
Clean Your AC Unit
The outdoor AC unit is exposed to the elements all year long. Keeping it clean can help extend its lifespan. Remove twigs, leaves, and debris from the unit with a broom. For harder to remove dust, dirt, and bird droppings, use your garden hose. This little bit of AC maintenance will keep the air conditioning unit from clogging or breaking down when you start it back up again in the spring.
Cover the AC
In addition to our routine AC services, you will want to cover the unit. Use a waterproof plastic or vinyl cover over the unit. This will insulate the unit, protect it from the elements during the winter months, and prevent cracking. Air conditioning unit covers are easily found in your local home improvement store, but in a pinch, a waterproof tarp held with bungee cords will work.
Add Insulation
To avoid premature AC installation, wrap all exposed pipes and wires with foam covers. Be sure to pay attention to any pipes or wires that enter the house. Duct tape can be used to keep the foam coverings in place. Adding insulation keeps the wires and any fluid inside of the pipes from freezing and cracking.
